I am definitely not an expert in making jams, and in fact, I know a few Jam queens out there who make delicious, vegan, locally produced jams – ehem – Tradestreet Jam Co. But I do not how to make things taste good in a minimal amount of time, tehehe. If you live in Manhattan then you know there are a ton fruit vendors everywhere – and that’s usually where I get my seasonal fruit. The quality is good, I like supporting small business owners, and they know me now they always put in a little extra for me!
This time around I had 2 fairly large baskets of black mission figs – so delish – but they were getting very ripe, very quickly and a fruit lovin’ gal can only eat so many figs at once. So I woke up one morning this week and though why not make a quick Fig Jam? It’ll last much longer, goes great on pretty much everything, and is a great way to not waste! I kid you not, I made this jam in 15 minutes on a work day and it’s super easy! You likely have all of these ingredients on hand already. So make this Fig Jam this weekend and spread on a couple of crostinis with some fresh herbs – YUM.
15 Minute Fig Jam
- 1 heaping cup ripe black mission figs – stems removed and quartered or diced
- 2-3 tbsp raw cane sugar
- about 1/4 cup water
- 1 3 inch orange peel
- 2 stems of fresh mint
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
1. Place everything in a pot and bring to a boil – stirring to incorporate.
2. Reduce heat to about low and cook stirring occasionally to reduce down. About 10 minutes in, remove the mint and orange peel.
3. Continue cooking and stirring – I used the back of my spoon to mash down the figs a bit. Once the mixture has become a dark red color and the figs are completely broken down and there’s a slow bubbling, your jam is complete. Transfer to a mason jar and allow to cool completely before cover. Store tight and in the fridge.
4. Eat on everything.
